MIAMI (WSVN) - A young man and a teenager were hospitalized after a stabbing at Miami Northwestern Senior High School.
City of Miami Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the incident at the school, located at 1100 NW 71st St., just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday.
According to a 7News source, an 18-year-old student was stabbed, prompting law enforcement officials to respond.
Paramedics also transported a 15-year-old to the hospital after receiving a laceration to the hand.
Both students were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center.
According to 7News sources, a fight broke out in a hallway of Miami Northwestern Senior High, leading to the stabbing.
Cellphone video captured two people attacking another individual by punching, kicking and at one point body slamming the victim.
In the video, students are seen running away through the hallway, and a student is heard saying that another student has a weapon.
“He’s got a knife, he got a knife,” said a witness.
7News cameras captured one of the victims being taken into Ryder Trauma Center. First responders said the 18-year-old suffered serious injuries but is stable.
Cameras also captured Miami-Dade Schools Police investigators and vehicles behind the school on Monday afternoon, which was cordoned off with crime scene tape.
Miami-Dade Schools Police is leading the investigation, and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene investigators are assisting with the search for clues.
Miami-Dade Public Schools officials released a statement on Monday that reads:
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of an incident involving students at one of our high schools. The matter was immediately addressed by the school’s administration and the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, subsequently resulting in criminal charges. The District takes the safety and well-being of our students and staff very seriously and remains committed to maintaining a secure school environment for all.”
Tuesday morning, students at the school reacted to the violence on campus.
“A lot of use suffer from anger issues, and we are reckless, but to take out weapons over a small argument and stuff like that, it’s like, it’s crazy, honestly,” said student Dagna Caceres.
A family member of the 18-year-old student told 7News he remains in the hospital recovering from his injuries.
7News has reached out to M-DCPS about who investigators believe was responsible for the stabbing, what charges the subject may be facing and whether any security measures will be implemented in the school in the wake of the incident.
