FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — A Broward County high school student was awarded a high honor, Friday.

Cadet Maj. Kyle Ramos was named the Junior ROTC Cadet of the Year at a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale. He attends Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The cadets were evaluated based on their academic performance, leadership skills, community service and school involvement.

At the ceremony, Ramos acknowledged those who lent him a helping hand along the way. "I wouldn’t be here without everyone else in this room," he said. "Everyone has supported me, and this program is the only reason I’m here, and this program is why I’m Cadet of the Year."

Broward County Schools has the largest Junior ROTC program in the nation.
