GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 23 Florida could be without leading receiver Antonio Callaway against North Texas on Saturday.
Coach Jim McElwain says he’s “a little nervous” about Callaway’s availability in the Gators’ final tuneup before playing Southeastern Conference rival Tennessee.
Callaway injured a quadriceps in a 45-7 victory against Kentucky. Callaway leads Florida (2-0, 1-0 SEC) with 13 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long, 78-yarder against the Wildcats.
Quarterback Luke Del Rio says playing without Callaway would benefit younger receivers. Callaway and Brandon Powell have accounted for half of Florida’s 48 completions.
Del Rio says “you do want to get these young guys some reps and some throws to them, get some live action because it is invaluable. It’s different. Game speed is very different.”
The Gators will be without receiver Tyrie Cleveland (hamstring) against the Mean Green (1-1).
