WASHINGTON (AP) — The Homeland Security Department is temporarily halting deportation flights to Haiti as the nation recovers from Hurricane Matthew.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson says the U.S. government will restart the removal flights as soon as possible.
The temporary halt of flights to the country won’t change the government’s newly enacted policy to detain and eventually deport Haitian immigrants stopped at the border.
DHS announced the plan to detain and deport newly arriving Haitians last month. Before that, such immigrants were being allowed into the United States on what is called humanitarian parole.
