DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A man and a woman fought off a carjacker who tried to take a vehicle from a Daytona Beach gas station with a child in the back seat Monday, police said

Surveillance video from the 7-Eleven shows a man get out of a Dodge Charger and walk to the passenger side, where a woman got out of the vehicle. As they stood there, a man later identified as Ayodele Akiode got in the car and started to drive away, Daytona Beach police said.

The woman jumped halfway through the passenger’s side window, trying to stop the man, according to WKMG. The man who was with her went to the driver’s side and began punching the alleged carjacker through the window of the moving vehicle.

The car rolled through the parking lot and crashed into a pole, police said. That caused the man and woman to fall to the ground, arrest records show.

The child was not injured, but was taken to the hospital with the man and woman, WKMG reported. Their conditions were not available.

A police report said the crashed caused an estimated $10,000 worth of damage to the car and $2,000 in damage to the pole.

Akiode, 34, is facing attempted kidnapping and carjacking charges and remained in jail on Tuesday morning. A lawyer for him was not listed on court records.
