SUNRISE, FLA. (WSVN) - Police in Sunrise are investigating a fatal house fire that appears to be suspicious.

The fire chief of the City of Sunrise confirmed the body of a man was discovered inside a house on fire on the 11000 block of Northwest 21st Court, just after 2:30 p.m., Thursday.

Adding to the suspicious nature of the fire, officials discovered a second fire nearby, on the 4000 block of Northwest 118th Terrace, a house owned by the same person who owns the house where the body was found.

Steve Damico described the moment he saw the flames. “I was in my backyard, and I saw some smoke coming up from over the fence where the house is, so I just got out, ran around the corner, saw there was a house on fire,” he said.

Damico tried to help rescue the person who was inside the house at the first scene. “There’s a lady across the street, and she didn’t have anything to say but ‘My son was in there and someone needs to go and try and help, try and help,’ to go over there, so that’s when I proceeded, ran around the back. There was other people there smashing out windows, and I was there helping, just trying to find whatever we could find.”

Beyond the fact that the houses were owned by the same man, the connection between the fires remains unknown. The age of the deceased is also unknown.

Crime scene tape has been put up at this second home and part of the neighborhood has been blocked off.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fires.
