According to Miami Fire Rescue, the driver became trapped as the vehicle began to sink. First responders dove in and brought him to shore.
The driver, identified by Miami Police as 24-year-old Ciro Curra, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him.

No one else was inside the minivan.
After the rescue, Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll detailed the operation. “Visibility is probably only a foot in front of you,” he said. “This vehicle, we understand, was at the bottom of the river upside down, which made it very difficult for divers to maneuver their way inside.”
The van was later removed from the river. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash.
