MIAMI (WSVN) - If you needed a reason to eat cake (or pastelitos) this Thursday, then look no further — it’s the city of Miami’s 120th birthday!

One hundred and 20 years ago, long before Miami became synonymous with leisure and nightlife, a visionary named Julia Tuttle, along with William and Mary Brickell, convinced Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon, to expand his Florida East Coast Railway to Miami — and the rest is history.

On July 28, 1896, Miami was officially incorporated as a city with a population of about 400.

Today, with a population of over 441,000, the City of Miami has become a melting pot of cultures and a mecca for all things business, art and healthcare.

So, in honor of the city’s big day, officials from U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to Mayor Tomas Regalado have taken to social media to celebrate with the hashtag, #HappyBirthdayMiami!

And if you needed any ideas on how to celebrate, we suggest brewing up some cafecito for your coworkers or bringing home some pastelitos after class and of course, eating some cake!

Happy Birthday, Miami. You don’t look a day over 100 😉
