PORT ORANGE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say an 8-year-old central Florida boy has died after accidentally shooting himself at his home.

Port Orange Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi said the boy’s 12-year-old brother and a neighbor gave him CPR for 10 minutes Friday guided by a 911 operator, but couldn’t save him. The unidentified child was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was taken by police escort.

It’s unclear whether the 9 mm handgun was secured or how the boy got a hold of it, but Grimaldi said the child accidentally shot himself in the chest.

The child’s mother declined comment to the Daytona Beach news- Journal. The newspaper reported the family’s 80-year-old great-grandfather was also home at the time of the shooting
