HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida family is OK after a carjacker stole an MDX Road Ranger's tow truck and crashed into the sliding door of their apartment.

The crash happened at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at 1555 W. 44 PL. Investigators said the family was asleep when the subject crashed into their home. "I'm in my room sleeping with my wife, with my young children and I don't know what happened," said Reynaldo Aspuru.

Rescue crews had to extricate the subject from the stolen vehicle before transporting him to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. "We actually had to get a tow truck to remove that tow truck and then cut the car out to get the individual out of the tow truck," said Hialeah Fire Rescue Dean Perkerson.

No other injuries were reported.

Aspuru is grateful his family was not hurt. "Thank God," he said.

Hialeah Fire Rescue said they've never seen anything like this. "I have never seen a subject taken out of an extrication in handcuffs," said Perkerson.

The subject is recovering in the hospital, where he will later be taken to jail.
