DAVIE, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida organization is thanking their volunteers who help children learn to read, Friday.

The United Way of Broward County hosted an end-of-the-year appreciation breakfast for Reading Pal volunteers, teachers and principals.

The Reading Pals program connects tutors with Pre-K through Third grade students to ensure students are reading at their grade level. “Without a foundation for literacy, you just can’t really do anything,” said Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. “You can’t learn other subjects, you can’t take assessments well. It’s absolutely critical for success in life.”

The program requires volunteers to dedicate an hour per week for 25 weeks to read to individual students or in a small group.
