BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida man is charged in the death of his roommate’s dog after authorities say he beat the animal and tied it to a doorknob in the backyard of a house without giving it water.

News outlets report Boynton Beach police say 22-year-old Marquan Parks of Boynton Beach was arrested Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty.

A police report says Parks’ roommate found his female pit bull dead at the home in September. It was wearing a choke chain and was tethered to the back doorknob with a leash.

A necropsy concluded that the dog died of probable strangulation and contributing factors like heat stroke.

The report says Parks told police that he beat the dog and tied it to the doorknob after the animal chewed up his shoes.

It isn’t clear if Parks has an attorney.
