HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - An elderly couple is lucky to be alive after, officials said, an SUV crashed into their bedroom while they were both sleeping.

According to a witness, a vehicle traveling along the Davie Road Extension in Hollywood, crashed into an apartment around 2:30 a.m., Tuesday. The SUV crashed through a fence and drove through some bushes before hitting the apartment.

Police said the driver may have had a medical emergency behind the wheel, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV went through a metal fence and bushes before crashing into the apartment.

A husband and wife, ages 81 and 83 years old, were sleeping when they woke up to their mattress on top of them and the sight of an SUV inside their bedroom.

“When I woke up, I opened eyes eyes and thought the roof had fallen on top of me,” said the victim, 83-year-old Yvonne Abouzeide. “I came away with just a bump on my head… I could’ve been dead.”

“Last night before I went to bed, I prayed,” said Abouzeide. “I tell him, I said, ‘Lord, watch over us through the quest of the night, anything, just keep us safe if it’s your will, and if you take us home, it’s OK,’ but He wasn’t ready for me.”

7News spoke to the victim’s daughter in-law, who called it a miracle that her in-laws were still alive. “I just couldn’t believe it,” said Keshea Abouzeide. “I said, ‘How are you guys still alive?’ It’s only by the grace of God that they’re still alive … they were in the bed, the police said they were in the bed, sleeping, and someone jumped over the car to come and help them.”

The couple does not know who called 911 and helped transport them to the hospital. Both victims are said to be OK and have since been released.

The driver responsible was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
