MIAMI (WSVN) — A new kind of classroom aiming to give South Florida students a hands-on science education made its debut, Friday.

Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho unveiled the Miami Science Barge at the Museum Park, near 11th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. The floating, public science education platform features a marine biology lab and a sustainable fish and vegetable farm.

Miami Commissioner Frank Carollo said the unveiling of this valuable facility couldn’t have come on a more fitting date. "This is going to be a great learning place for our students, our youth, especially when it comes to STEM, science, technology, engineering and math," he said. "It’s just a great day, Earth Day, to celebrate the unveiling of the Miami Science Barge."

The barge will host K-12 field trips, high school and college internships, public workshops and more.
