WSVN — Everyone wants to be successful and make money. Choosing a college major is one step to getting on that path, but it can be difficult. In tonight’s Money Monday, Lynn Martinez shows us which majors are going to bring in the most money after the college days are over.
As college students head back to class, the big decision is what to major in.
Fernando Figueredo, Director of F.I.U. Career Services: “We do have a lot of students that come in and they’re thinking dollar wise. ‘I want to be a doctor because doctor’s make a lot of money.'”
Fernando Figueredo is the director of Career Services at F.I.U. He says salary plays a big role in some student’s decisions.
Fernando Figueredo: “Salaries do have an impact on the career that they choose.”
Topping the list of money making majors…engineering.
Fernando Figueredo: “Within engineering, you actually have a very wide scale. Those that are getting into mining and petroleum engineering are getting paid in the 80’s and 90’s.”
Computer science majors are a close second coming out of college making an average $62,000.
Careers in health science, like nursing, are always in demand and continuously seeing an increase in salaries.
Fernando Figueredo: “We’re looking at their salaries continuing to go up from the 40’s to the 50’s and now the high 50’s.”
If math and science isn’t really your thing, business majors are pulling in top dollar too.
Fernando Figueredo: “Marketing, accounting, finance, those are starting salaries in the 50’s.”
While money does play a role in choosing a major, it should not be the only thing playing into the decision.
Fernando Figueredo: “The most important thing is not so much to worry about the salary but to choose a career that they’re really interested in.”
Figueredo encourages students to seek out their career services department to help them make the best decision.
Fernando Figueredo: “We talk to the students and they’ll tell us what their interests are and then based on that, we’ll help them choose a career.”
