ABILENE, TX (WSVN) — An Air Force veteran in Texas had trouble finding a job because he needed his service dog with him.

Clay Luthy served three deployments in Uzbekistan, and two in Qatar. But after multiple knee surgeries, he could not re-enlist. Luthy cannot bend his knee, and his 10-year-old golden retriever, Charlotte, is trained to help Luthy get back on his feet if he falls.

“I was trying to figure out where I could go that would be a good fit and wouldn’t mind having Charlotte,” Luthy said. “My wife said I was at Lowe’s so much anyway, I might as well get a job there.”

Luthy applied to work at the Lowe’s in Abilene, Texas, with Charlotte by his side.

Jay Fellers, the Human Resource Manager at the store, interviewed him for the job, and decided Luthy and Charlotte would be a perfect fit.

“We went through the interview process and Clay and his own merit won the job,” Fellers said. “We knew he was going to make a great employee – we just got the benefit of getting Charlotte right along with him.”

Luthy has been working at the home improvement store for two months, but it wasn’t until someone took a photo of Luthy and Charlotte, both in uniform, that their story went viral online.

“By the time I looked at it, there was a thousand comments on it. Oh my gosh, it was ridiculous,” Luthy said. “I found a way to have a productive life and my prescription is four-legged.”
