MIAMI (WSVN) - A local student has been named the winner of the World Cadets Chess Championship.

Nikhil Kumar, an eight grader at Ransom Everglades was crowned champion in the World Cadets Chess Championship, under-12 division.

“There were 11 games, and I won eight of them and tied three,” Kumar said. “It’s an achievement, but it doesn’t mean that I’m going to like stop playing. I’ll continue doing what I’ve been doing for the past four years.”

The tournament was held the last few days in the country of Georgia — a former Soviet Republic. Kumar finished first in a field of 137 students from 36 countries.
