WSVN — No matter what the calendar says, in South Florida cold treats are always in. 7’s Belkys Nerey shows us why helado is the new ice cream in tonight’s Style File.

Something cool has arrived from South America.

Jamie Delatorre: “I’m obsessed.”

The popular Argentinean store Freddo has brought helado to Lincoln Road in Miami.

Arthur Artiles: “They started in 1969 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Freddo is a household name. When you go out for helado, everyone goes to Freddo.”

So what is helado? It’s a cross between American ice cream and Italian gelato.

Arthur Artiles: “It’s less fat, less airy, which gives us a nicer, creamier consistency.”

Rebecca Deville: “The richness of the ice cream is amazing.”

All of the helado is handmade in Argentina and carefully shipped to Miami. There are 30 different flavors, anything from dulce de leche to banana split, along with loads of toppings, chocolates and creams.

Arthur Artiles: “We have white chocolate helado, chocolate freddo with candied cranberries.”

There is even a light side of helado.

Arthur Artiles: “Every serving has less than 200 calories. You don’t have to feel guilty.”

And the Lincoln Road store is the first of 150 Freddo stores in the world to serve à la carte desserts. Among the standouts: the helado panini.

Arthur Artiles: “Soft, little sweet bread, kinda like a Hawaiian-style bread. We actually toast the bread, have the nice ice cream inside, and have choices of sauces.”

Jamie Delatorre: “It’s very soft, crunchy, and at the beginning, it’s kinda warm outside.”

Or sample a classic Argentinean treat like alfajor, which is helado sandwiched between soft cookies, or indulge with molten lava cake.

Arthur Artiles: “We have chocolate lava cake with white chocolate helado. Nice, hot, gooey inside. Nice contrast with cold helado.”

So go ahead, be like the cool kids.

All the helado and desserts range from $6 to $8. There are also sorbets and smoothies.
