NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Star Wars fans across the country flocked to stores as the first wave of merchandise from the upcoming film “Rogue One” hit shelves, Friday, and South Florida was no exception.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” doesn’t open in theaters until Dec. 16, but in the meantime, fans will be able to celebrate its impending arrival by snagging coveted collectibles from the film.
7News cameras captured toy collectors scooping up the highly anticipated figurines at the Toys R Us in North Miami Beach. “It’s a huge day,” said assistant manager Steven Perez. “A lot of Star Wars fans are coming out to get their collectibles, and that new, hot ‘Rogue’ product.”
The store opened in the wee hours of the morning to accommodate fans. “Everybody else is here early, so I’m trying to just grab it before I miss out on it,” said fan Edgar Maldonado.
Maldonado said he wants to get his hands on the Black Series, a new wave of six toys, including a mix of “Rogue One” and “The Force Awakens” characters. “The Black Series is a hot commodity, a very good collection,” he said. “Very detailed figures and really, really, really, really high in the collector’s mindset.”
The Stormtrooper is one of the most popular.
Star Wars fan Zion Quiros wants to get his hands on the Hover Tank Pilot Series. “I have stuff from [Episodes] 4,5 and 6. I barely have stuff from 1,2 and 3, and I have a whole bunch of stuff from Episode 7, and now I’m getting stuff from ‘Rogue One.'”
Other favorites include the Jyn Erso figurine and Chewbacca. A Jedi lightsaber is also among the new products.
Even Lego is getting in on the “Rogue One” action.
Also very popular is the new Imperial Death Trooper Funko POP! bobble-head. It costs a little over $10.
