BOCA RATON, FLA. (WSVN) - Animal services reunited a dog who went missing for eight years with its owners, this past weekend.

Pia-zadorables’s owner was on vacation eight years ago when a workman left the door open at her Boca Raton home and the dog ran off.

“Someone had left the door open. She’s gone, never to be seen again,” Penny Howard, the owner, said.

When Palm Beach County Animal Control picked her up Friday, she was covered in fleas and ticks. Now she’s back with her owner. They discovered who she belonged to thanks to a microchip.

“A mess, perfect dog for me, took her home. After about a year and a half she let me pet her,” Howard said.

Tri-County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton called her Tuesday with the good news.

“I run up there. I’m hysterical crying. They go, ‘Well we have a dog here with your microchip with your phone number.’ I went ‘Oh my God, that’s Pia! She’s alive,'” Howard said.

Officials said they think whoever picked her up originally didn’t have her scanned for a chip.

Howard said anyone who finds a stray pet, remember to have them scanned.

“If you find a stray dog, take them immediately to a vet or one of the shelters and they can scan the dog, because there’s another owner grieving and that dog can be returned if it has a microchip,” Howard said.
