JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — There’s a new baby bonobo at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
The zoo announced the birth on Wednesday.
The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/2b7eZD7 ) reports it was the eighth endangered bonobo born at the zoo. Bonobos are endangered great apes native to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa.
The baby was the fifth for the mother, Kuni.
According to a news release, the baby will be on view with its mother and other members of the group at the Great Ape Exhibit for at least a part of each day, weather permitting.
The zoo is one of seven around the country to house bonobo. Officials say the birth is important to the Bonobo Species Survival Plan, which serves as an assurance population for wild counterparts.
