HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - According to Hollywood Police, four people were transported to the hospital after an elderly man driving an SUV struck a bus bench in Hollywood, Monday afternoon. One of the victims later died.

According to police, at around 12:45 p.m., an elderly man driving a Honda CR-V lost control of the vehicle and struck three people who were standing at a bus stop bench, located along the 3600 block of Washington Street.

“I came outside. I saw that the rescue trucks were already coming to help,” said nearby homeowner Carlos Escobar. “It was a big crowd, three cars or four cars parked in here that had probably seen what was going on.”

Four people were injured, including the elderly driver. They were all transported by Hollywood Fire Rescue to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Only one of the three people struck by the SUV were considered to have serious injuries, according to police. She succumbed to her injuries Tuesday morning.

The front of the vehicle was left caved in. The force of the SUV pushed the bench several feet away.

The bus bench is located across from Memorial Regional South Hospital. However, they were not taken to this hospital.

Escobar told 7News he’s not surprised about the crash. “Surprised? No, not really. There were a lot of different things happening in roads. People drive really fast, and they’re fighting through sections in here. This is not an easy place to avoid an accident.”

There is no word on what exactly caused the crash.

Traffic homicide detectives have since taken over the investigation.
