Many of us can’t get up in the morning without a good cup of coffee, but a South Florida coffee shop is taking java beyond the daily ritual. Deco stopped by Panther Coffee on Miami Beach and got a taste of coffee cupping.
Whether it’s a double cappuccino or a nitro cold brew, Panther Coffee has your fix. But for those who really want to experience coffee — there’s coffee cupping.
Alex Bistritz, Panther Coffee: “Cupping is an industry standard on how to evaluate and test coffee. It allows us to have an intentional and meaningful conversation about coffee with our guests.”
Just like wine tasting, cupping is a feast for the senses.
Alex Bistritz: “They live in the same world, both of them have quality tasters. There is some terminology we get to use. There’s definitely body, aroma.”
First step — smell the coffee.
Alex Bistritz: “You’re gonna tap the coffee to allow some of the gases to release … and smell it.
Add hot water and smell again…
Alex Bistritz: “You’re gonna get more of the tasting notes we talked about before.”
Customer: “It’s very earthy to me. Strong, earthy.”
Alex Bistritz: “So basically what we’re doing now is called breaking the crust. It’s gonna allow the coffee to drop down to the bottom of the cup, as well as release some of the gases.”
Now we taste the coffee. No sipping allowed — it’s time to slurp.
Alex Bistritz: “Anything you’ve ever learned about being polite or proper, not slurping your food — goes out the window. Take a little off the top … slurp! That allows it to coat the entire palette.”
Whether you’re a coffee snob or a newbie — this experience will fill your cup.
Customer 2: “It just really opened my eyes to other types of coffee, the flavor. It’s not just about catching a buzz.”
Customer 3: “I like the Brazil a lot. One of the flavor notes it gives is chocolate fudge and I think it’s a good description of that coffee.”
Customer 4: “I’m pretty new to coffee tasting and I enjoyed all of them. For me, it’s mostly experiencing all of them and getting to know what’s available.”
