SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Padres appear to be close to an agreement with right-hander Edwin Jackson on a minor-league contract.

A 37-year-old right-hander, Jackson was released by the Miami Marlins on June 4 after allowing seven runs, 13 hits and six walks in 10 2/3 innings.

It’s not clear how Jackson, a former starter, would be used if acquired by the Padres.

Four Padres starters, Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Robbie Erlin and Cesar Vargas are on the disabled list. James Shields was traded to the Chicago White Sox.
