FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - A Miami Dolphins player will not face any charges after, police said, he was involved in a fight outside a Fort Lauderdale nightclub.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the incident happened near the entrance of Cyn Nightclub, located at 111 S.W. 2nd Ave., early Sunday. Fort Lauderdale Officer John Giga said he was working a detail when he saw what he called an altercation between two groups.
Investigators said Miami Dolphins linebacker Koa Misi was accompanied by a 10-to-15-person entourage when they charged 34-year-old Scott Cabrera as he stood in line in front of the club. In a police report, Giga stated, “I was unable to stop all of them from charging and ran back toward the entrance to where I witnessed Misi strike Cabrera in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.”
The officer then confronted Misi, who stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs about 255 pounds. He stated in the police report, “I was able to force [Misi] to the ground and have him sit in place against the door … Misi then got to his feet and tried to run northbound.”
The officer said he then gave chase on foot. “As I attempted to tackle him, members of his group held him up. I then executed a leg sweep to bring him to the ground and held him in place,” he stated in the police report. “I was circled by several members of his group that were trying to pull him free until assisting FLPD officers arrived and assisted me in handcuffing Misi.”
The takedown move Giga said he made to bring down Giga was made popular in the original “The Karate Kid” back in 1984. The famous phrase referring to the tackle is “sweep the leg.”
Police said Misi was detained, but he was not arrested because Cabrera did not want to press charges and didn’t want to talk to officers very much after the incident. Misi was allowed to go.
When asked why Misi or members of his group were not charged after they allegedly prevented the officer from detaining the 29-year-old linebacker, police said it was up to the officer’s discretion, especially since Cabrera did not want to press any charges.
The Miami Dolphins sent 7News a statement on the incident that reads, “We are aware of the reports involving Koa Misi and are continuing to gather information. We have no further comment at this time.”
Cyn Nightclub management told 7News they went over surveillance footage, but said the video did not reveal anything about the fight.
This is not Misi’s first brush with law enforcement. He served probation community service in Santa Barbara, Calif. in 2013 as a result of an altercation in which he was accused of punching a man in the face.
