SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jeff Mathis hit a grand slam, Tom Koehler pitched six quality innings and the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Mathis hit his first homer of the year in the first inning, when Miami scored all of its runs off Drew Pomeranz (5-7).
Koehler (5-6) won for the third time in four decisions. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk and struck out eight.
Pomeranz has been the Padres’ most consistent starter but was doomed by the five-run first. He was lifted after five innings and charged with five runs on five hits. He walked five with six strikeouts.
In Pomeranz’s 13 starts, it marked just the second time he allowed more than three runs.
A.J. Ramos got his 20th save with a scoreless ninth.
