SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Miami Dolphins were a footnote to what might have been the last NFL game in San Diego.
Danny Woodhead scored four touchdowns and the Chargers raced to a 30-14 victory Sunday in a matchup of last-place teams.
The Dolphins didn’t score until late in the game, getting a 12-yard run by Jay Ajayi and a 1-yard keeper by Ryan Tannehill.
"I’m disappointed, frustrated, upset, mad, angry, any adjective you can think of right now," Tannehill said. "To come out and play like that on both sides of the ball is unacceptable in every sense of the word. We have to find a way."
Miami (5-9) lost for the fourth time in five games. It has only 231 yards of offense.
"I know we have the talent to come out and finish strong," Tannehill said.
"We have to go out there and execute no matter what the situation is," defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said. "We can’t be discouraged by anything. We have to go out and play as professionals and men."
If this was the last NFL game in San Diego, the Chargers at least provided a win for their long-suffering fans.
Woodhead caught touchdown passes of 20, 9 and 9 yards and scored on a 2-yard run.
The Chargers Cannon went off with each touchdown by the home team.
"San Diego Super Chargers," the disco ditty from the Air Coryell years, rang out after rookie Josh Lambo kicked a 28-yard field goal.
It might have been for the last time.
No one knows if this was the last Chargers game in San Diego after 55 seasons. Team chairman Dean Spanos has been angling since February to try to beat St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke to the Los Angeles market, which has been without the NFL for 21 years.
The Chargers (4-10) have gone as far as to partner with their hated rival, the Oakland Raiders, in proposing to build a stadium on the site of a former toxic waste dump in Carson. Kroenke has proposed a stadium in Inglewood. NFL owners could vote on relocation next month. The Chargers walked away from negotiations with city and county officials in mid-June.
Some fans brought signs deriding Spanos, whose family has owned the Chargers since 1984. The Chargers have had only 12 winning seasons under Spanos ownership. They will miss the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons.
Although there were many empty seats at kickoff, fans gave the Chargers a rousing ovation as they headed to the locker room with a 23-0 halftime lead.
The play of the game came early in the second quarter. Rivers was intercepted by Reshad Jones, who weaved through traffic for 42 yards before guard Orlando Franklin stripped the ball. After a wild scramble, Rivers jumped it. The Chargers moved down the field for Lambo’s 28-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead.
Woodhead caught a 20-yard touchdown pass to cap San Diego’s first drive. He scored on a 2-yard run and caught a 9-yard TD pass in the second quarter. He caught a 9-yard scoring pass late in the game.
In the fourth quarter, the Chargers played a video tribute to Floyd, who is retiring after this season, his 12th with San Diego. Rivers tried to get Floyd a TD pass but was intercepted at the 1 by Brent Grimes.
