MIAMI (AP) — For the Miami Marlins, the final days of another losing season means it’s time to begin their latest managerial search.
Former major league manager Manny Acta interviewed for the job Tuesday, a person familiar with the situation said. The person confirmed the interview to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Marlins declined to comment.
The interview is the strongest indication yet that current manager Dan Jennings won’t be back in that job next year. It’s uncertain whether he’ll return to his former position of general manager.
It’s also unknown whether the Marlins have interviewed other candidates to replace Jennings. The next skipper will be owner Jeffrey Loria’s seventh since June 2010.
Acta hasn’t managed since he was fired by the Indians near the end of the 2012 season. He spent three seasons with them, and managed the Washington Nationals in 2007-09.
All of his teams finished below .500, and Acta’s career record is 372-518 (.418). However, he twice finished in the top five in manager of the year voting.
The Marlins expected to contend for a playoff berth this year but instead are nearing the end of their seventh consecutive losing season. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2003.
Jennings made the unusual move from the GM office to the dugout in May after Mike Redmond was fired. The Marlins went 16-22 under Redmond this season, and they’re 48-65 under Jennings.
Jennings is under contract with Miami through 2018. Following a loss Tuesday to Philadelphia, he declined to discuss his status.
"Right now we’re focusing on these final 11 games, and this series with the Phillies," Jennings said.
