The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is a federally-recognized tribe since 1962 and is the
first tribe to totally manage its own affairs under the Indian Self-Determination Policy. Originally
part of the Creek Confederacy, an association of clan villages along waterways in the southeast
United States, modern-day Miccosukees are direct descendants of Mikasuki-speaking natives
who used the harsh terrain of the Everglades to elude capture and relocation. For more
information on the Tribe’s long and proud history, please visit Miccosukee.com.
