Immediately following a hurricane, hospital emergency rooms are often inundated with people who have minor cuts and soft tissue injuries. Many of these injuries can be handled at home. However, you should come to the hospital or bring your loved one in the following medical crisis situations:
- Head injury with loss of consciousness, nausea and/or vomiting
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Significant abdominal pain
- Acute neurologic symptoms
- Extremity injuries with obvious deformities
- Any significant penetrating injury
