OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A former Northern California jail inmate sued four former guards who he says encouraged other prisoners to spray him with feces and urine.

Fernando Miguel Soria and his attorneys on Tuesday filed the civil rights lawsuit against the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department and the four men in federal court.

Soria says he contracted hepatitis C because of the attacks in October and November 2016 when he was jailed in the Santa Rita Jail for resisting arrest.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Soria says he doesn’t know why he was targeted.

The four deputies were arrested last year by their own department and charged with assaulting inmates.

The sheriff’s office and county attorney declined comment, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.
