(WSVN) - Busy school mornings can make breakfast a challenge, but there are ways to get children fueled, even if they’re not big on breakfast.
While getting out the door before school can be a tough task, making sure your student can power through the day doesn’t have to be as hard.
Katherine Shary, a licensed dietitian, said if a child doesn’t enjoy eating first thing in the morning, that’s OK, and the meal doesn’t have to be large.
She said just giving children some sort of protein and a carb can help them kick off the school day.
“What we want to make sure is that it has balance and some good protein in it to help get them to maybe the next snack or that next lunch,” said Shary. “That would be something like a whole wheat piece of toast with some peanut butter, maybe some hummus on there.”
Other simple and effective healthy breakfast ideas include Greek yogurt with added berries and nuts or seeds.
Shary said parents may also mix in peanut butter for another pop of protein, as well as a little honey or maple syrup, but they should be mindful to limit the overall sugar content.
“A breakfast also doesn’t just have to be breakfast food, it can be leftover dinner. We could have a turkey wrap, we could have a peanut butter and banana sandwich,” said Shary.
Shary said breakfast pizzas can also be a hit — made with a whole-wheat tortilla, a little sauce, with maybe some leftover beans or chicken from the night before and pop them in the oven to warm them up.
Breakfast burritos are also good on the go, and they can be packed with eggs, veggies, avocado and cheese.
Shary said parents can make these burritos ahead of time.
“Freeze them, and that’s something quick and easy that we’ve made in bulk, and we can have multiple times throughout the week,” she said.
Some other ideas parents can try is to dress up scrambled eggs with cheese or making eggy muffins.
The dieticians also advised to let children pick out what veggies and cheese to put in those muffins, because it’ll make them more likely to eat it in the mornings.
