COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The father of a young girl whose decomposed body was found in a crib at their Ohio apartment has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Eric Warfel was convicted on charges including corpse abuse and drug abuse. His attorney said after Friday’s sentencing that an appeal is likely.

In letters requesting leniency, relatives and friends described Warfel as a gentle, protective father who was devastated when his 5-month-old daughter died in 2013 and couldn’t cope when another daughter died last July.

A cable company worker found the body of 21-month-old Ember Warfel in a Medina (meh-DY’-nuh) apartment.

Officials couldn’t determine a cause of death because of decomposition. Warfel’s attorney has said Ember was born with severe medical problems.

The 2013 case was ruled a “sudden unexplained infant death.”
