MIAMI (AP) — Quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw three touchdown passes for the Miami Dolphins during an intrasquad scrimmage Monday night that attracted 22,876 at Sun Life Stadium.
It's believed to be the largest crowd to attend a Dolphins practice in at least 15 years.
Tannehill threw TD passes to tight ends Charles Clay (24 yards) and Dustin Keller (14), as well as running back Daniel Thomas (9).
Tannehill was 8 of 11 for 72 yards. He has not thrown an interception in any practice since Tuesday.
Lamar Miller and Jonas Gray both scored on short touchdown runs.
"(The offense) did some good things," Coach Joe Philbin said. "We did some good things in the red zone, some good things in the goal line and obviously we didn't get off to a great start, but it's good to see them (respond positively)."
Miami's two expected starting wide receivers, Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline, were held out of the scrimmage. Hartline took part in drills early before going to the sideline and talking to a trainer.
Defensively, first-round pick Dion Jordan made his presence felt on the pass rush. He had a "sack" — quarterbacks were not tackled — and was one of two players to get into the backfield on another passing play.
It was a good night for the Dolphins' 2013 draft picks.
Third-round pick Will Davis intercepted Pat Devlin in the end zone on third-and-goal from the 1 on the last play of the scrimmage.
Tight end Dion Sims, a fourth-round choice, had one catch for 6 yards. Running back Mike Gillislee, a fifth-round selection, gained 20 yards on six carries and had two receptions for 21 yards, but did lose a fumble.
Safety Kelcie McCray, who missed all of last season because of a foot injury, had the biggest play on defense as he intercepted a Matt Moore pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Moore finished 5-for-11 for 48 yards.
Safety Reshad Jones and defensive end Olivier Vernon each had two sacks, and rookie defensive tackle A.J. Francis had a sack and a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. Vernon had his left thigh wrapped after his second would-be sack, but returned to the scrimmage.
Veteran Dan Carpenter, who is looking to hold off rookie fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis to keep his kicking job, missed two field goal attempts from 49 yards and had an extra-point attempt blocked. Carpenter hit from 50, 44 and 32 yards.
Sturgis sat out the scrimmage as he continues to nurse an undisclosed injury.
The Dolphins open the preseason Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
"Some guys stepped up and made plays," Philbin said. "Obviously there was some sloppiness. We have to be a lot better in six days. That's not surprising. We will take a look at the tape and make the corrections and we will play better on Sunday."
