MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida city is honoring a woman who made history in the local police force.

The Miami Gardens community showed a sign of respect for Officer Thelma Harris.

Commissioner Barbara Jordan has renamed Northwest 175th Street, between 27th and 37th Avenues, as Officer Thelma Harris Way.

She was the first black female police officer in the Sunshine State and served 20 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Harris’ relatives joined the commissioner at the official ceremony and received a proclamation for the officer’s historic achievement.
