One of the most neglected spaces in our home is the stairwell. Our makeover maestro, Martin Amado, is stepping up with some design help to the rescue!
Martin Amado: “Alright Kim. So, ‘Room for Improvement’ is here to help you. What is your decorating issue?:
Kim: “I moved here two years ago and I’ve always wondered what to do with my staircase and landing. I have a ton of pictures of relatives and family that live out of state and I don’t know how to display them.”
Martin Amado: “Well, the good thing is it’s a nice big open space. At the same time, it’s also a challenge for me because it’s a big, wide open space. Let me see what I can do and we’ll surprise you at the end.
Kim: “Thank you!”
A staircase landing is used everyday, but at the moment, this one is very bland. Well, you know I’m changing that. On today’s ‘Room for Improvement’ we’re creating a beautiful gallery wall for family photos on this side and an awesome focal point as soon as you walk up the stairs. Let’s get to work.
When you have an architectural detail like this one on the wall, with the bump out, it’s a great opportunity to add an accent color to make it really stand out. It’s subtle, but it will make a big difference on the wall.
Painting a wall against a popcorn ceiling can be tricky because you don’t have a straight line. So, the tip is, to load your brush with paint and then hold the bristles right up against it and kind of wiggle the brush across.
Now, I’m starting to create the layout for my gallery wall. I always start in the center with my focal point and then I work my way out. I love adding shelves like these because we can lean frames on them, like this. Plus, we can add some other decorative elements as part of the overall display.
This side is done. Now, we can concentrate on the main wall that you see as soon as you walk up the stairs. Based on the size of it, you know we need something really big. By adding two sconces with flameless candles, we create a nice grouping without adding too many things on this wall.
Martin Amado: “Ok, Kim. So, before there was nothing here. Now, you can go ahead and take a look!”
Kim: “Oh, I love the — how did you do all that?”
Kim: “This is perfect!”
Martin Amado: “Are you excited?”
Kim: “I’m so excited! Thank you! Very happy!”
Martin Amado: “Thank you so much for letting us do this for you.”
