DORAL, Fla. (WSVN) — Police honored some fallen Miami-Dade heroes, Friday morning.

For the fifth year, Project HERO showed appreciation for law enforcement officers who died on the job.

HERO is an acronym for "Honor Every Resting Officer" and is designed to ensure all officers who died on the job are remembered and appreciated. "I think it’s an honor that our local law enforcement agencies and law enforcement agencies around the county go back to the dead and pay respect and put the blue flag on them, to remind them that we care about them," said Miami-Dade Police Assistant Director Freddy Ramirez III. "[They’re the] backbone of what we do in this community."

More than 135 Miami-Dade officers have died in the line of duty since the department’s inception.

From May 1 to 31, U.S. and eternal line flags are placed at their grave. Badge-shaped grave markers, labeled "police officer" hold the flags in place.
