LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. (WSVN) — A facility that helps released inmates transition back into society is closing its doors, and some aren’t happy about it.

The Department of Corrections pulled the plug on its longest running prisoner transitional program in Broward County.

The state decided not to renew Bridges for America after its contract expires in May. The president and CEO said it’s not the right move. "We feel very strongly that the Department of Corrections made a mistake in closing this facility," said Bridges of America president Lori Costantino-Brown.

The department said, "Earlier this year, the department was notified by the Lauderdale Lakes City Council that an ordinance would be proposed which will re-zone the address at which our probation offices currently operate. A transition plan has been formulated which will ensure a smooth transition for work release, substance abuse treatment and probation services."
