NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama is undertaking a determined fence-mending mission to unite the Democratic Party behind Hillary Clinton and draw in Bernie Sanders supporters reluctant to give up after a grueling primary fight.
Obama’s impending endorsement for Clinton is being treated as a fait accompli as the president travels to New York for Democratic Party fundraisers Wednesday. They will be his first political appearances since Clinton became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
Though the White House is keeping mum about the timing, all signs point to Obama endorsing Clinton on Thursday after he meets with Sanders in the Oval Office. Democratic leaders hope their meeting will be a moment of catharsis for the party, sending a signal to Sanders’ supporters that it’s time to back Clinton.
