FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - Hillary Clinton is expected to address gun violence concerns when she serves as keynote speaker at the Fort Lauderdale gala for the Trayvon Martin Foundation, Saturday night.

The Democratic presidential candidate is set to speak at the Embassy Suites along Southeast 17th Street, just after 7:30 p.m.

The hot-button topic is something that Sybrina Fulton, the organization’s founder, knows firsthand. She started the foundation to honor her late son, Trayvon Martin. “Do something positive for another mother, another family,” said Fulton. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, on Feb. 26, 2012. He was 17.

Clinton is set to deliver the keynote speech at the foundation’s third annual Circle of Mothers conference. Money raised at the gala will go toward helping mothers who have lost a child to gun violence.

Earlier this week, Fulton discussed her personal commitment to the cause. “Love is what cancels out all the evil,” she said, “all the wrong that I might think in my mind … but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is what’s in my heart and helping other people.”

Fulton has gone on the record endorsing Clinton for president. Political insiders view Saturday’s South Florida stop as part of the candidate’s efforts to appeal to black voters in a crucial swing state.

Gun violence and inequalities in the criminal justice system have been frequent talking points for the likely Democratic nominee on the campaign trail. After a solid victory in the Florida primary, she will likely turn her attention toward presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump during her visit.

Tickets for the gala require a minimum donation of $1,500.
