MIAMI LAKES, FLA. (WSVN) - Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi has filed for re-election at Miami Lakes City town hall, Wednesday.
According to his campaign, Pizzi decided to file for reelection after hundreds of town residents flooded his law office over the past week asking him to continue as mayor.
“I love being mayor more than anything else because of the many great things I can get done for our Miami Lakes residents,” he said in a statement. “It has been a great honor to serve as Miami Lakes mayor these past eight years. That’s why I have filed for re-election.”
Officials said Pizzi has acknowledged the tough competition he faces but is prepared to campaign and serve a third term as mayor of Miami Lakes.
Pizzi was arrested in 2013 at his office in an FBI sting operation, accused of being involved in a kickback bribery scheme in connection with federal grants in Miami Lakes and Medley. He was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion.
However, in August of 2014, Pizzi was acquitted on federal bribery charges and had to fight in court for his reinstatement.
Pizzi then sued the City of Miami Lakes in 2015 and later returned to office in April of that year.
