Miami Springs Police have arrested a driver accused of hitting a state corrections officer’s car and then fleeing the scene.
The hit and run accident happened around 5 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Northwest 36th Street and Miller Drive.
Thursday morning, authorities arrested Ariangel Iguaran, who, they said, was behind the wheel of the mini-van that struck the officer’s car.
Miami Springs Police said Iguaran, 32, got out of his vehicle after the crash and tried to help the trapped corrections officer. When he could not get the victim out, he then fled on foot. “The subject advised he panicked, and that’s why he left,” said a Miami Springs Police spokesperson. “He was here to meet a female friend, and he said he turned and the crash happened. There is no excuse for people to leave the scene of an accident, especially when somebody’s injured. It’s a felony.”
The state corrections officer is still recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Doctors said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Iguaran has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
