WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the immigration plan he’s unveiling Thursday night is a commonsense, middle ground approach. To Republicans who oppose his action, he has a three-word challenge: “Pass a bill.”
Before Obama’s address, the White House put out an excerpt from his remarks. In it, Obama says the actions he is taking are not only lawful but are the kind of actions taken by every president for the past half century.
Obama says the immigration system is broken and that mass deportations would be impossible and contrary to the nation’s character.
Republicans say Obama is exceeding his authority, and they are assessing how they might be able to thwart him.
