MEDICATIONS
Physicians and pharmacists recommend that residents stock up on essential medicines and medical supplies.

  • Prior to a hurricane, check your over-the-counter medications for expiration dates and toss out all expired medications and purchase new ones.
  • It is recommended you have on hand first aid items such as gauze bandages, as well as antibiotic creams and basic over-the-counter items, like acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin.
  • For prescription medications, it is recommended to have at least a 14-day supply on hand that can get you through the aftermath of a hurricane. Community pharmacies may not be open immediately after a hurricane. Insurance coverage tends to approve pre-refills during a hurricane watch. Please check with your insurance carrier.
  • After a hurricane has passed, electrical power is often unavailable. Stock up on dry ice for those medications, such as insulin, that will require refrigeration.
