ALBANY, N.Y. (WSVN) — The alleged rapist of a wheelchair bound, mentally challenged woman in Albany, New York may have fled the area and could be hiding in South Florida, according to U.S. Marshals.
Michael Hawkins, 29, allegedly assaulted a wheelchair-bound victim in her own apartment on June 10, 2012, only a few feet away from her family members who slept in a nearby bedroom. The victim, who is mentally challenged, reported the sexual assault the next day, and a warrant was issued for Hawkins’ arrest. He received several charges including aggravated sex abuse in the first-degree.
According to U.S. Marshals, the wanted fugitive targeted another victim. On Nov. 8, 2013, Hawkins allegedly assaulted the wife of his friend, who had invited him over to her home for a family gathering. He was then charged with first-degree rape.
Officials said it is possible Hawkins may have fled the area after his crimes. They believe he may be in Florida due to family ties he has in the state. Hawkins, nicknamed by his friends as "Zombie Mike" for his poor hygiene, can easily hide anywhere, including wooded areas.
“Predators like Michael Hawkins who prey on helpless victims must be brought to justice,” said U.S. Marshal David McNulty of the Northern District of New York. “We, along with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, are determined to make sure he’s held accountable, but we need the public’s help."
Due to his prior employment by traveling carnival companies, officials believe he may be traveling with a similar company in Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and states along the East Coast.
A reward of up to $5,000 will be given to anyone with tips leading directly to his arrest.
