BRADENTON, Fla. (WSVN) — Phew! That was close! A young baseball fan was almost hit in the face with a baseball bat after it came flying towards him while he was looking down at his phone. Luckily, another fan saved the day by reaching out his arm and blocking it from his face.
The incident occurred on Saturday at a spring training game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves, who played in Bradenton, Florida.
Photographer Christopher Homes captured the images and shared it on Twitter. "The two frames showing just how close the bat was to the boy’s head," the tweet read.
The incident occurred after Pirates outfielder Danny Ortiz lost control of the bat.
“I didn’t know what happened, if it (hurt) the boy or anything,” Ortiz said in an interview with Trib Live. “I went home and my wife said to me, ‘You almost killed that kid!’
