BOCA RATON, Fla. (WSVN) — A flying piece of metal debris smashed into a 22-year-old man’s face while he was driving on Interstate 95, Friday morning.

According to police, Holden H. Amory was driving his convertible BMW on a bright, sunny day when suddenly, a large, sharp piece of metal or machinery flew from a vehicle, then bounced off another and smashed into the windshield of his convertible, striking his face.

The impact was so strong, that it smashed the driver’s side of the windshield and left the interior of the vehicle in shambles and bloodied. Amory’s guitar and music equipment could be seen in the back seat of the car.

"That’s the second time, in 10 years, that I’ve seen debris go into a car like that," said tow truck operator Pat Elia. "I thought he was dead. I really thought he was dead. That’s head-on."

7Skyforce flew over the scene, which occurred in the southbound lanes of I-95, near Palmetto Park Road, north of Hillsboro Boulevard.

Workers said the Amory is lucky to be alive. "Especially on 95, on the road every day. He’s a lucky man, you know," said Elia. "I feel for him and his family right now."

Boca Raton fire rescue transported the Amory to Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach where he remains in critical condition.
