Woman reunited with man who pulled her from gas station fire

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A woman was reunited, Monday, with one of the good Samaritans who rescued her from a gas station fire, more than a week ago.

Cell phone video captured a car’s fiery explosion at a Northwest Miami-Dade gas station, on Oct. 16. The car had crashed into one of the gas station’s pumps, and a woman was trapped inside.

The video showed numerous bystanders carrying that woman, Sherry Smith, away, and on Monday, she was reunited with one of her saviors, Herbert Tarvin.

“Wow, you don’t know what you did. No, I need a hug,” Smith told Tarvin as he approached with a bouquet of flowers. “Thank you for being there. Thank you for getting me out. Thank you for just being you.”

Smith was on the way to her 49th birthday party when the driver lost control of the car and it flipped over, slamming into a gas pump on Northwest 27th Avenue.

Tarvin and a group of other strangers ran towards the flames to pull Smith out.

“The body hurting, but my spirit, since Herbert took me out, I been good,” Smith said.

“It’s a blessing because it makes me feel good about life, and it just shows that if you help a person, it goes a long way,” Tarvin said.

It’s not the first time Tarvin has made the news for a good deed. When he was 11, he made national headlines when he returned 85 cents he took from a Brink’s Truck that rolled over in Overtown.

“I just did it because it was the right thing to do,” Tarvin said 19 years ago, after that first famous good deed.

Smith is happy Tarvin is still doing the right thing, calling him her guardian angel.

“I’m gonna keep this one, this one mine right here, you can spread it around, but this one’s mine,” Smith said. “Glad you was there. Hope you’ll always be where somebody — I know you’re always where somebody wants or needs you to be.”

Smith says she was arguing with the driver of that car when the crash happened, and she won’t be driving with him again.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
