MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - One day after her husband drowned after trying to save her from rip currents, a Fort Myers woman is speaking out about the tragedy.

Kendra Smith and her husband were visiting Miami Beach from Fort Myers, Sunday, when they were carried away by a rip current. While Smith survived after they were brought into shore by a lifeguard, her husband, Sherrod Whittington, did not.

“I was trying to hold onto him and he was trying to hold onto me,” Smith said, “and in some kind of way, you know, he lost his grasp and then he got me back again.”

Lifeguards began CPR on Whittington immediately after he was brought back to the beach. He was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“Life is just so short,” Smith said. “I would have never guessed, in a million years, that we were going to have fun, and the next thing you know he’s gone, but he’ll always be my hero.”

The couple had been married for two years.
