NAPLES, Fla. (WSVN) — A video of a father eating dinner with a blanket over his head is addressing an international controversy about breast-feeding.

Brock Smith was having dinner with his family when their 2-month-old daughter Everly started fussing.

His wife, Lauren Smith, was having a hard time getting the baby to breast-feed. “It was particularly hot that day — about 104 degree index,” Brock said. “I think it was because it was so hot under the blanket. So Lauren asked me, ‘How would you like to eat under a blanket?’ and I said, ‘Well, give me a blanket.'”

That exchange led to a video he posted on Facebook — writing “As a dad and a husband, I’ve had enough of this asinine argument.”

“I wish I didn’t have to eat with a blanket over my head,” Brock could be heard saying in the video.

Brock said he and Lauren work with many pregnant women and new mothers in their fitness groups and, after two kids, they know how stressful breast-feeding can be. “It’s hard when you’re out in public and you feel those eyes on you,” Lauren said.

“We have never been directly shamed for it, but we do hear the horror stories about moms that do and we just wanted to give them a voice,” Brock said.

The video has gotten thousands of likes, shares and views — reaching people as faraway as the UK and Croatia. “We didn’t expect anything to come from it. We didn’t expect any attention. I said, ‘Well, it goes to show that this really is an issue,” Lauren said.

Now they are sharing a message of support. “We know that there are moms that are very anxious whenever they are trying to breast-feed out in public. We are not saying to cover up. We are saying just do what you want to do and feel comfortable doing it,” Brock said.

Brock’s video has been viewed more than 100,000 times on Facebook.
